But it's not a decision one should make on whim; multiple factors can easily complicate the process, experts say. But in most cases, the U.S. buyer will need to open a bank account in the country they're buying real estate. 'Understand what your needs are'It will be important for you to "understand what your needs are," Boisson Aries said. "Buying these direct properties for that purpose is something that comes with far more risks than people realize," he said. If you're thinking of selling your home this year, you might want to do it in the first two weeks of June. U.S. sellers who listed their home during that time span in 2023 sold their homes for 2.3% more when compared to other months in the year, according to a new Zillow analysis. Zillow's analysis of its 2023 listings supports this conclusion: Spring and summer months had a 0.5% to 1% increase in sales prices compared to the yearly average. Conversely, sales prices dropped by about 2% during winter months, compared to the yearly average. June should be the standout month of 2024 too, Zillow experts expect.

And yet, every day, people across America hire a real estate agent to help them sell a home. While state governments license real estate agents, NAR has an extensive code of ethics it expects members to adhere to. NAR and the brokerages have vowed to appeal the verdict, which means real estate commissions aren’t going anywhere immediately. Last month Redfin, an internet real estate company, left the association. The longer-term impact of the verdict may be that the pairing of buyer’s agent commission and seller’s agent commission will eventually be separated.

Despite high prices and mortgage rates, they said homeownership will pay off for many people in the long-run. Many Americans have been left wondering when — if ever — the time will be right for them to enter the housing market. "Many homeowners first bought their home when interest rates were high — the 50-year average rate on a mortgage is 7.8%," he said. Even if cuts to interest rates cause mortgage rates to fall, they're unlikely to return to the near-zero levels they were in 2022. If and when mortgage rates fall, Yun said that some homeowners who have been eager to move — but have been reluctant to give up their low interest rates — will likely decide to sell.
